LA Takeover

Wednesday 17th March
After the success of Disrupt:on 001 with James Blake up here in Leeds and the Disrupt:on 001/002 down in Bristol, this is set to be the most ambitious line up yet. The regulars are still all on the bill, but expect something a little different, but no less mad.....

Nosaj Thing (Alpha Pop) http://www.nosajthing.com/

Straight from the west coast is pushing the boundaries of electronic music. His music creates 'electronic soundscapes' while your mind takes you wandering through memories past. Any fans of Joy Orbison will love this guy, and his new album 'Drift' is definitely worth getting your hands on.

Nosaj Thing - Aquarium

The XX - Islands (Nosaj Thing Remix)

TOKiMONSTA (Brainfeeder/Ramp) http://www.tokimonsta.com/

Another soundscape musician from the west coast, she was an ex classical pianist who has moved on to digital manipulation. She has played along side Nosaj Thing before and is a perfect complement. Think Darkstar with soul vibes.

TOKiMONSTA - The World is ours

Lupe Fiasco - Kick Push (TOKiMONSTA Remix)
A much more chilled vibe, probably not in the live set but still an easy listen

"Exit through the gift shop"

As you walk into lectures each morning you might be awake enough from the night before to notice the poster for the new Banksey film "Exit through the gift shop" taking up lots of space on those big bollards in Hyde Park. At Leeds, mate we are not all about the music and here's a good example of something you should get out and do that doesn't involve a lot of hard earned/government funded pound.

"A film about a guy who tried to make a film about me" Banksy

It follows the life of a film maker/obsessive-Filmer-of-everything/eccentric Thierry Guetta, who joins some of LA's biggest street artists while they make their work, filming a documentary. Guetta then meets Banksy, and Banksy turns the tables: making a film about Guetta ('Mr. Brainwash') doing his street art. When you watch it you are not sure whether this is fact or fiction and whether this film is in fact a spoof-documentary, with an ironic undertone.

Regardless of the nature of the creation of this film, it is well worth a watch. Its all original footage of Banksy working, and although he does not reveal his identity at any point, the footage and ideas behind the West Wall and the Guantanamo-Disneyland stunt both are, along with countless others.

Its not on in lots of cinemas but in Leeds we are fortunate enough for it to be showing at The Vue cinema at The Light (NOT Kirkstal Road), and from what i can see its only on Monday and Tuesday this week, 22:00 showings........

Bangerang Launch Party

Thursday 11th of March 2010

Born in a basement in Hyde Park, 2 years on the time has come for BANGERANG to move to one of the hottest venues in Leeds - STINKY'S PEEPHOUSE (formally known as MyHouse). Three floors and 5 bars (for the minority who have to experience this club) makes this one of the biggest venues but still keeps all the intimacy and a house party vibe.

Line ups full of hot talent - not least the big name at the top The Boog-A-Loo Crew (Trouble and Bass). Probably best know for thier remix of DRT's tune - Rising sun, they have shared bills with some big names and our one of the biggest names to rise up in 2010 (but by no means a new act)

Check out the download over at our friends The Hush House
http://hush-house.blogspot.com/search?q=drt

'Calling All Dancers' is another massive tune, more bass, more dub than 'Rising Sun', find on their MySpace page.

STUPID FRESH are also on the sheet, providing the electro beats to your ears. They have been playing large since 2005 when when they won a DJ competition here in Leeds, and have been playing their trademark sound of 'sledgehammer beats, elephantine bass and lashings of groove'.

Line-Up:
Boog a loo Crew
Stupid Fresh
Andy Burby
Mighty Hoaz + Harry Craze
Joey Nelson
Eniz + Tecknician
Phatpat and Pasteman
10 pm till 5 am

Tickets: 4.50 (Guest List)/5 (OTD) / 6 (after midnight)

This Week in Leeds...

We've just realised how mad this week is in Leeds, so we're going to give you a taster of our line-up in video form...

Tonight, as you may have already seen, is Bigger than Barry with B Rich and RESO.

We focused on B Rich in our blog post, so here's the heads up on RESO. There's only so much you can do with words, mere words, so here's a video that will do so much more:

And then there's the man B Rich:

on Wednesday, were going to try something different and warm up our ears at The Grand Theatre in Leeds with Gilbert and Sullivan's seminal opera 'Ruddigore':

and then we'll dive straight back into the swamp with our friends over at Disrupt:on inc have also put out a mad line-up for those in the know - so we're heading down to Wire. James Blake is doing the rounds at present, at it would be criminal to miss him at the price of £4...

With support from big names, especially in Leeds, Signus and Wachs Lyrical who'll no-doubt break out his Jelly Hammer:

Thursday is the big one, with Vagabondz 3rd birthday (see other post). Goldie, Plastician, Dub Club, Doctor P, EZ ect going to lift the roof off Stylus. You will have seen the vagabondz boys outside the union all week, creating a stir, all this hype will not disappoint. Some garage for your ears mixed by the DJ EZ:

We're putting the dancing boots back on to celebrate the end of the week. We know the old saying, 'you can have to much of a good thing' but we're not sure that's even possible when talking about Mint. This time our man Barry has been replaced with a Bad Robot, but the speakers still sound the same. Emalkay is taking over the booth and will no-doubt leave you feeling like you've got your sea-legs on still:

(The version over at Wizards, available free to download is also pretty nice.)

Also playing is the Wax:on favourite Doorly. But while this is one not to be missed, we're probably going to head over to the O2 Academy for a little bit of Sit On My Bass. The line-up is the best we've seen from them in quite some time: starting with Klose One and Rattus Rattus and then bring out the cannons with Flux Pavillion (see this post on Isaiah on Fire for more information):

and then GINZ:

After seeing the weekend in in such fine fashion, we figure it's best to continue in this vein and where better to do that than the West Indian Centre. The stage is always shaking and they never run out of Red Stripe. What more can you ask for?

We put out a post on this a while back, here's some of Silkie's rhythms:

and this one to take us home:

Now we're tired after just writing all of this, let alone living it. If you're still going after on Sunday, all we can recommend is sleep - this might help:

Bigger Than Barry

If you don't know by now, you must have been living under the half-pipe in Hyde Park. Bigger than Barry, at such a tender young age, has already become an establishment in Leeds. Step aside Tequila, you've been knock off your shitty little throne.

This week the Big Man is back with B RICH. He is currently embarking on his first overseas, European tour so be sure to get down and check this one. He's got everything in his locker to make you dance. One of our favourite tunes from last year is a remix of B. Rich by The Living Graham Bond, get it here:

Make Me Dance (TLGB Remix) – B.Rich

His new EP, which is available here from our good friends over at the Hush House should get you in the mood. Click here for more details, tickets and get your dancing boots on...

If that wasn't enough, RESO will have you're ears ringing until the weekend with his gritty base sounds that might raise demons from the underworld if they crank the Mint system up to 11.

IF THAT ISN'T ENOUGH, (you're taking the biscuit, of course it is), but our favourite duo since the Chuckle Brothers, PHATPAT & PASTEMAN, will also be doing their thing on the ones and twos to keep you going.

It's going to be a good one...

One final note, them queues be mad outside Mint so get down early with your ticket or be prepared to fight.
